Posted Friday, May 05, 2006 9:28:00 AM by Blog57 Team
A joint study conducted by Revenue Science and the Ponemon Institude finds that a majority of consumers prefer advertising based on their individual interests.

Specifically, 63 percent of those surveyed said that Internet marketers should "always" understand their interests prior to sending them advertising, while 55 percent stated that online ads of interest to them "improves" or "greatly improves" their overall online experience.

The Ponemon Institute, a research institute catering to privacy management practices in business and government, polled more than 1,700 people to learn about consumers' motivations and preferences in receiving online advertising, as well as how knowledge about cookies impacted these issues.

"This study shows that not only do consumers prefer relevant advertising, but also that advertisers should consider behavioral targeting methods for providing consumers with more relevant ads as long as privacy and anonymity are assured," said Dr.

Word cops take down online video gamers' 'pwn'
Posted Tuesday, January 02, 2007 2:47:50 PM by Blog57 Team
DETROIT -- Online video gamers inadvertently stumbled onto a pop culture phenomenon when they began championing the use of "pwn," a misspelling of "own." Now, linguist police around the globe say it's high time to bury the cryptic term, which means to dominate or soundly defeat. "Pwn" is one of 16 words or phrases that appear in Lake Superior State University's annual List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Mis-Use, Over-Use and General Uselessness. The Sault Ste. Marie school released its 32nd annual version today after sifting through more than 4,500 nominations. The list reads like a lexicon of popular culture, and is fed by peculiarities and annoyances from the media, politics, entertainment, advertising and elsewhere. Submissions are culled from the university's Web site and evaluated by an ad hoc committee over the holidays, said university spokesman Tom Pink....

Planning Ahead for 2007

Now is a great time to start thinking about how to drive traffic to your website next year, like getting the word out on TV, radio, and direct-mail campaigns. With the arrival of the holiday season, many e-commerce site owners and managers breathe a sigh of relief. Finally, we can relax, perhaps take a vacation, and simply close out what was hopefully a successful 2006. Well, maybe. That's because December and early January are also the perfect time to analyze what's worked over the past 11 months and put together an integrated marketing plan for 2007. We've all heard it: "Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance." It's a saying that reaches far beyond the world of business and marketing. However, without a strong marketing plan, you're likely to be winging it over the year ahead, and no self-respecting businessperson would ever admit to winging it when it comes to running a business....

Handbook will demystify online advertising
Posted Wednesday, November 15, 2006 12:48:43 PM by Blog57 Team
A new book from the Advertising Research Foundation (ARF) aims to give marketers clarity regarding online advertising and will lead to more investment in the medium. To be released early next year, The Online Advertising Playbook will feature sections covering broad topics such as online ad strategies and targeting approaches, as well as more specific issues such as search, display ads, email and ecommerce."It's the first time we as an industry have come together to discuss what we've learned in the past ten years," the ARF's chief strategy officer, Ridgway "Taddy" Hall told a panel discussion in New York."It will finally establish a core body of knowledge that will give advertisers the confidence to allocate substantial parts of their budgets to the medium."The proportion of marketers' budgets spent on internet ad campaigns currently stands at between five and seven per cent, although it is growing quickly as more and more people realise the benefits. The appearance of the handbook highlights this shift, but Giovanni Fabris of McDonald's believes that more can still be done.Mr Fabris said that companies need to realise the internet's importance as a tool for creating communities and for providing contextual messages before they can make full use of the medium. The ARF is "the premiere advertising industry foundation for creating, aggregating, synthesizing and sharing the knowledge required by decision-makers to lead and succeed"....

Japan considers ban on online ads for pirated CDs, DVDs
Posted Tuesday, November 14, 2006 10:59:33 AM by Blog57 Team
TOKYO: Japan is considering imposing a ban on online advertising for pirated items in a bid to crack down on circulation of pirated CDs and DVDs, an official said on Tuesday. Japan has voiced concern about the proliferation of pirated goods being sold by the Internet at home, even as the country takes aim at China and other countries for violating intellectual property rights. Japan's current Copyright Law proscribes sales of illegally copied CDs and DVDs but not advertisements for such products, meaning that violators can only be prosecuted after the transaction is completed. "Even when pirated products are advertised on the Internet, the act of advertising itself is not a violation of the law," a government official said. "It is a violation only when it's proven that the advertiser copied intellectual goods for the purpose of selling them." "We have to take some measures," he added....

Online Casino Affiliate Programs Spread Through the Web at online casino news and casinos update
Posted Sunday, November 12, 2006 6:48:44 PM by Blog57 Team
The online casino industry is slowly expanding its reach across cyberspace with growing affiliate programs designed to create free advertising for online casinos on websites related and sometimes unrelated to online casino gambling. Website owners and webmasters maintaining a website covering a large range of online casino related topics are often offered incentives to promote a certain online casino on their website, sometimes with cash and other times with online casino coupons or merchandise. Online casino affiliate programs are often a good way to brake in to the online casino industry. But often it is just a system for two or more online casinos to create a network between themselves in order to generate a larger influx of user traffic. Becoming an online affiliate is not only profitable for online casinos but also for those who run online casino websites and would like to make a few extra bucks.Online casino affiliate programs vary from online casino to online casino....

Four Industries Expected To Top Half Of Online Advertising
Posted Saturday, November 11, 2006 2:50:51 AM by Blog57 Team
Media and entertainment, financial services, travel, and automotive are expected to account for more than half of the total spending on online advertising in five years, a market researcher says. The four industries will spend $11.5 billion in 2011, comprising 57% of all online ad spending that year, according to JupiterResearch. Spending is expected to increase across all industries, but the four biggest spenders are likely to open their wallets wider to take advantage of consumer trends. Many people use the Web to search for the best prices for plane tickets, hotels, car rentals, and other travel-related services. In addition, a growing number of online consumers use the Web for online banking and to research automobiles, watch videos, and listen to music. In five years, automotive and travel advertisers will be the third and fourth largest spenders, respectively, JupiterResearch said....

Google expands to offline advertising

(AP) -- Google plans to start selling advertising space in 50 top newspapers, expanding the Internet giant's efforts to provide services off the Web and making it easier for firms advertising online to also show off their products in print. A group of more than 100 Google advertisers will be able to place bids for space in newspapers owned by The New York Times Co., Gannett, the Tribune Co., the Washington Post Co. and Hearst during a three-month test period, according to news reports. Many newspaper executives see the proposed system as a way to increase sales as they struggle with reader defection and competition from online advertising. They downplayed any risks of letting Google handle their relationships with advertisers. ''We go into this with both eyes open,'' Mike Lemke, senior vice president for sales and marketing at Seattle Times Co., told the Wall Street Journal....

Growth of online entertainment, chatting puts entrepreneurs on lookout for advertising revenue

Google's recent blockbuster deal to pay $1.65 billion in stock for YouTube, an online video company that has yet to turn a profit, pumped air into the theory that another Internet bubble has inflated. Certainly tech's new boom, which has been labeled ``Web 2.0'' by some, has many similarities to the dot-com days of the late 1990s, when twentysomething millionaires rode their scooters through the corridors of short-lived startups and companies with little or no real revenues were commanding obscene valuations on Wall Street. Upon closer inspection, this latest Internet run-up has a deeper grounding, with millions of people online -- and millions of dollars in advertising being spent to reach them. ``A gigantic gush of consumer products advertising dollars is moving online,'' said Paul Kedrosky, a venture capitalist and author of the Infectious Greed blog....
