JPL to Hold High-Tech Conference for Small Business

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., will host the 19th annual High-Tech Conference for Small Business on March 6 and 7, at the Radisson Hotel near Los Angeles International Airport. The two-day conference will focus on subcontracting and marketing opportunities for small, minority, women-owned and veteran-owned businesses in high-tech industries. It includes several "how-to" workshops featuring information on major programs, small business initiatives and other topics. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with approximately 250 corporate, federal, state and city government representatives to discuss potential contracting and subcontracting opportunities. One-on-one counseling to discuss potential business opportunities is available with more than 100 exhibitors....

Wells Fargo Generates 1 in 5 Small Business Lending Dollars in U.S.

Small business loan growth remains strong according to the latest, most comprehensive government data. In 2005, Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC - News) increased its year-over-year small business lending by over 30%, extending $18 billion to small business owners nationwide (in loans under $100,000). Total small business growth for loans under $100,000 increased 4%, from $93 billion to just over $96 billion, according to the 2005 Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) data. CRA data provides the industry's most comprehensive set of small business lending figures. With 95 percent of all small businesses generating less than $2 million in annual revenues, tracking loans under $100,000 is an important measurement of how financial institutions are meeting the capital needs of small business owners. For the fourth year in a row, Wells Fargo leads this category, extending over 680,000 loans nationwide with an average loan size of just over $26,000....

Firm to Offer Small-Business Healthcare Discount

National Health Partners Inc. of Horsham said today it entered a joint sales and marketing agreement with the Small Business Network of America. National Health provides discount healthcare membership programs. The network is a national membership association that uses its group buying power to negotiate discounts and rebates for its members. The deal calls for the company and the network to target the 25.9 million small businesses in the U.S. "There is a tremendous demand among small businesses for discount healthcare programs," said William J. Ritger, co-founder of the network. "National Health Partners has a cost-effective solution to one of the biggest problems faced by the small business community, and it will play a prominent role in our marketing plans." Shares of National Health were up 1 cent in mid-morning trading to $1.25 on the over-the-counter bulletin board....

The company also announced the Latitude 131L, which it terms a sleek new notebook for small business customers. The new notebooks are the first from Dell to offer innovative mobile processor technologies from AMD. Some of the most frustrating problems facing small business owners -- the ever-rising cost of health coverage, expanding government regulations and uncertainty about taxes -- are again concerns as the midterm elections approach. Owners have hopes for change on some of these issues, but they realize that others are likely to remain unresolved, no matter who wins in November. Many small business owners say healthcare costs is one of their biggest problems -- they want to offer insurance to attract the best workers, but it's becoming more and more expensive. Businesses have been looking to the federal government for help, but a possible solution known as association health plans, which would allow small businesses to band together across state lines to buy insurance in groups, has continually stalled in Congress....
